NOTE: This is a walking photography tour, not a technical workshop. To benefit you the most it is advised you understand the basics of photography such as ISO, aperture, shutter speed and other settings on your camera prior to your tour. This is a perfect opportunity to put those lessons to practice in an urban setting.
TIP: If you’re a light chaser, check HERE for sunrise, sunset and Blue Hour times before deciding your start time. Select your travel month. The dates are along the left side of the chart. On this site, Blue Hour would be considered the “Civil Twilight” Start or End.
Eye opening! - Teresa guided my wife and me through the streets of Chicago for an unforgettable tour. We saw parts of the city that the "typical" tourist wouldn't know about. As an amateur photographer, I thought I knew more than I did. Teresa knew just how much guidance and instruction to provide while keeping the sights and subject matter interesting. She also added just the right amount of historical significance to the tour. The 3 hours went by in a flash (no pun intended) and could have kept going for another three. Thank you Teresa for an awesome day. You gave us a real appreciation of your city while making me a better photographer. Brian & Eileen, Toronto, Canada
Teresa is incredible. She has a great photographic eye and is extremely knowledgeable about Chicago - from popular spots down to the nitty gritty of Chicago. Before you take the tour she spends some time getting to know your preferences and creates an itinerary. The weather is a huge factor and she monitors the weather all the way up until the tour. Her tips and advice for urban shooting and photography in general are invaluable. Other than being a photo major in college (many moons ago) I've never had any kind of instruction and this was my first time in Chicago. This was the best way to get to know the city. HIGHLY recommend this tour. Order this tour already!
I LIVE in Chicago and this was a revelation! This will be a wonderful experience no matter what kind of equipment or experience you have. I booked the Fulton Market District tour for me and my nephew who is studying digital media in college. He has what I consider to be very fancy equipment and all I have is a camera phone, so I was thinking I would just be along for the ride. But we both got great shots! It's changed the way I take photos. My nephew has some wonderful additions to his portfolio and definitely learned a lot from people who understand not just the technology but the real craft of making a photo something more than just a recording of something you saw but an image that is truly evocative and personal. Our guide Teresa was very enthusiastic and patient with everyone regardless of their experience and the kind of equipment they had. She was also able to give some historical perspective to the things we saw which made it a very rich experience. I plan to go on another tour with Tour Through a Lens. I truly love my city so much. I saw it in a new way.
Great tour off the beaten path of Chicago - I had an opportunity to participate in the TTAL tour through the French Market and Fulton Market, areas in Chicago I had not previously visited. Teresa, the tour guide, was very knowledgeable about the area, provided great historical information, and also provided some photography tips to tour members. Overall great tour that I would highly recommend to anyone! Great walking tour!
An Amazing Time - I have had a great pleasure of meeting Teresa. Her knowledge and personality made me want to learn more and participate in other events. Cannot wait for those to post!
Get booking! For our big holiday to Chicago and Boston we knew we wanted to come home with some great pictures. As beginners with a dSLR and not knowing Chicago at all this tour was a fantastic way to start our holiday. By the end of the tour we had seen parts of the city we'd have otherwise missed and were taking all our photos on manual! Teresa was gently supportive, providing guidance and insight rather than didactic instruction (perfect for us) and was a lovely person to spend time with. We can't recommend Tour Through a Lens enough! Lisa & Jon
Great take on the city - I had a wonderful 3-hr tour with Teresa - she really tailored the tour to my interest, asked a lot of pre-tour questions to be sure she knew what my interests/abilities/equipment was, and was really flexible about the timing. Would absolutely recommend doing it to anybody, and if I come back I'd book another tour in a heartbeat!
One-on-one photo tour of downtown Chicago with Teresa Peek - My experience on this 3-hour, one-on-one photo shoot of downtown Chicago was a real adventure. Teresa allows you to pick a day and time of day for your photo shoot. She communicates with you in advance to ascertain your skill level in addition to your favorite photo subjects. Teresa is very knowledgeable of the history of the buildings and also gave guidance in photo composition and camera settings which was invaluable. I learned how to look at everything differently when taking photos. She offered helpful tips that assisted me specifically--how to hold my camera/use the viewfinder and other "little" things that made a big difference in how my photos turned out. She worked with me taking evening photos using the manual setting which I hadn't been brave enough to try on my own. Teresa knows so many interesting tidbits and shared so many of the hidden gems of downtown. She is patient, kind and very organized. She definitely knows her way around the City. When you take a tour with Teresa be prepared to explore via walking, the subway and the el. I highly recommend Tour Through A Lens to anyone who wants to expand their photographic skills, from amateur like me to the more seasoned photographer. Teresa has an amazing skill set and her pictures are absolutely amazing. Thanks so much for the most awesome experience!!!!!
Urban Grit with a pro Taking this tour not only changed the way I see my new city, it also taught me all kinds of ways to take better pictures of this place--or any other place. Teresa is knowledgeable about history, architecture, and local culture as well as photographic technique. She showed me hidden beauty, from rusting industrial infrastructure to street art, and she knew how to shoot it like a pro. This tour was unlike anything I've done before, and I can't wait to go out with Teresa again!
Highlight of our entire trip. - We booked a 3 hour one on one with Teresa and it was fantastic. Great communication and organisation. She is so knowledgeable about the city and a great person to spend time with. Our teenage daughter is the real photographer in our family - it's her passion - and she gained so much from Teresa - especially about composition and how to create an interesting photo - and the places we were taken and the views we were shown, we would never have found them. Visual gold - as an iPad owner I wasn't expecting to take that many photos but I couldn't stop. It was also great being shown how to use the 'L' - the elevated train system. Teresa was so generous with her knowledge and we felt like she really wanted to get to know us and deliver what we were interested in rather than just take us to stock places. So my advice to anyone reading this is don't hesitate to book Tour Through A Lens.
